Tesla maintained its Bitcoin reserves in the third quarter of 2026. Its holdings remained at 11,509 BTC, while the balance sheet value of its digital assets increased. The electric vehicle maker continued to hold its Bitcoin position throughout the reporting period.
The company released its financial results on Wednesday, October 21, after U.S. markets closed. Third-quarter revenue reached approximately $28.05 billion. Tesla reported roughly $28.10 billion in revenue during the same period last year.
For the crypto market, the distinction between reserve size and valuation stood out. Tesla maintained its Bitcoin holdings as price movements increased their accounting value. This illustrates how corporate crypto portfolios can affect financial results without any trading activity.
Tesla’s Digital Assets Reach $962 Million
The carrying value of Tesla’s digital assets reached $962 million at the end of September. The same balance sheet item stood at $674 million at the end of June. That represents a quarterly increase of $288 million, or approximately 42.7%.
The company recorded a $288 million pretax unrealized gain on digital assets during the third quarter. The after-tax figure totaled $224 million. These figures highlight the contribution of Tesla’s Bitcoin holdings to its financial results.
An unrealized gain does not mean the company generated cash by selling Bitcoin. Instead, Tesla reflects changes in the quarter-end value of its holdings in its financial statements. Investors therefore need to distinguish between reserve size and its reported dollar value.
The increase in digital assets also matches the reported unrealized gain. This suggests price movements drove the portfolio’s higher valuation. Current reports likewise indicate that Tesla’s Bitcoin holdings remained unchanged.
The $962 million figure represents the balance sheet value as of September 30. Subsequent Bitcoin price movements can change the portfolio’s current market value. The reported figure therefore should not serve as a real-time valuation.
Revenue Holds Steady as Net Income Falls
Tesla’s total third-quarter revenue declined approximately 0.2% year over year. The company reported revenue of $28.046 billion. Revenue stood at $28.095 billion during the same period last year.
Profitability, however, showed a more pronounced decline. Net income fell from $1.373 billion a year earlier to $787 million. Operating income also dropped from $1.624 billion to $718 million.
Tesla nevertheless ended the quarter with positive cash flow. The company generated approximately $6.26 billion in operating cash flow. After capital expenditures, free cash flow totaled around $1.53 billion.
Bitcoin Holdings Remain Unchanged From the Previous Quarter
Tesla’s SEC report covering the period ended June provides an important reference point. In that report, the company stated that 11,509 Bitcoin represented most of its digital assets. It disclosed a total acquisition cost of $386 million for those holdings.
Reports covering the third quarter show the same Bitcoin balance. The main change between the two periods therefore concerns the reserves’ dollar value. Tesla’s existing position continues to expose its balance sheet to Bitcoin price movements.
Maintaining its reserves does not, by itself, represent a commitment to future purchases. The available figures describe Tesla’s position at the end of the third quarter. Both its Bitcoin balance and valuation gains will remain relevant in future earnings reports.
