What is Market Cap?
Market capitalization (market cap) is one of the most fundamental metrics that shows the total size of an asset in the market, calculated by multiplying the asset’s current price by its total supply. For investors, market cap expresses much more than just the price; it helps them understand an asset’s size, position in the market, and relative importance.
The calculation of market cap differs across asset classes. In cryptocurrencies, it is obtained by multiplying the circulating supply by the current price. In stocks, the company’s value is determined by multiplying the total number of shares by the share price. For precious metals, the estimated total amount mined so far is multiplied by the current market price. For ETFs and index funds, the fund’s total asset size and share price form the basis of the calculation.
On this page, you can see the market capitalizations of assets such as gold, silver, Bitcoin, and Ethereum as well as major tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, and NVIDIA, and large exchange-traded funds presented in a comparative format. This allows you to track not only the crypto market but also the overall global financial landscape within a single table.
Market capitalization is a critical indicator for investors because it reveals which assets are preferred as safe havens, which sectors stand out, and where capital is being concentrated. For example, gold’s market cap exceeding 20 trillion dollars has made it a safe asset throughout history, while Bitcoin’s growing market share demonstrates that cryptocurrencies are gaining global acceptance.
